Bytedance and its VR strategy with Pico
When it comes to autonomous headsets, Meta and its Quest range are generally the big reference for everyone. But Pico and its parent company Bytedance are ready for the battle of the VR headset market.
The Pico 4 brings higher resolution screens, more compact pancake lenses and a colour camera. The brand also brings its creative touch to the ergonomics of its controllers.
But beware, the hardware is only part of the battle, the software part of PicoXR has to be up to scratch.
Let's talk about the comfort and ergonomics of the headset and how to enhance your experience with complementary accessories.
Strap: The Pico 4 is about as light as it gets, weighing in at 295g without the headband - although the headband, which is part plastic and part fabric, is not detachable, which is not quite right. It weighs 586g all in, which is more than a Meta Quest 2.
Face: The face mask and headrest are heavily padded, with excellent wicking properties at the front so you won't sweat after an hour or two of play. The artificial leather on the back doesn't slip off like softer materials do either. The face mask is held on by magnets, so it can be replaced without tools, and does a great job of blocking out light.
