We have reviewed the upcoming devices that could be launched in 2024. All the major brands are present with some exciting surprises in store.
The launch of the Meta Quest 3 has made virtual reality more affordable and accessible than ever, and Apple's entry into the scene with the Vision Pro has reinvigorated the industry and the high-end headset market.
Other hardware manufacturers are determined to get involved in this new wave of interest. Well-known names such as Google, Samsung, and Valve are reported to have headsets in development, and some smaller companies have very interesting projects.
Here is a list of VR & XR headsets that might well deserve some attention:
Valve Deckard
Valve, the creators of the Steam Deck, are actively developing a successor to their Valve Index VR headset. Although the company has not yet released detailed information about this next-generation virtual reality device, its ongoing commitment to the VR market is clear.
With its extensive experience in creating cutting-edge hardware and a solid game catalog, Valve is well-prepared to enhance the capabilities of its next VR headset. This expertise supports not only their new hardware projects but also contributed to the success of their handheld gaming console, which offers competitive prices and a solid selection of games.
Launched in 2019, the original Valve Index VR headset was offered with a complete kit priced at $1,000 and has maintained a respectable presence in the market. The upcoming new VR headset from Valve promises to be a significant launch, ready to compete with products from companies like Bigscreen, leveraging Valve's vast game library to attract users.
Meta Quest 3 Lite
No official announcement has been made regarding the Meta Quest 3 Lite, but rumors continue to circulate. Speculations suggest that this device could be a more affordable version of the existing Quest 3 headset, potentially replacing the Quest 2 in Meta's VR product lineup.
Market observers assume that the Quest 3 Lite might use the cheaper Fresnel lenses from the Quest 2 instead of the more advanced Pancake lenses found in newer models. The capabilities of the device are also uncertain, particularly regarding support for mixed reality.
Furthermore, the official name of the device is still under discussion, with some sources referring to it as the Quest 3 Lite, while others suggest it might be known as the Quest 3S.
Sony MR
We've already talked about this on the blog in more detail here. At CES 2024, Sony unveiled an innovative mixed reality (MR) headset, whose name has not yet been revealed, featuring impressive specifications, including dual 4K OLED screens and a series of sensors that allow switching to the real world. This device is equipped with the advanced Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor.
Distinct from the PSVR 2, this new headset operates independently and targets developers rather than the general consumer market. It comes with uniquely designed controllers, consisting of a "pointer" and an "interaction" unit, which enhance the device's functionality for development purposes.
Sony plans to launch this cutting-edge MR headset towards the end of 2024, although pricing details have not yet been disclosed.
Pico Project Swan
ByteDance, the parent company of Pico, a lesser-known virtual reality device manufacturer, has shifted focus from the anticipated Pico 5 to concentrate on a high-end mixed reality device. This new device is intended to compete with the Apple Vision Pro.
Currently in development under the codename "Project Swan", specific details about this mixed reality device are still scarce.
Apple Vision Pro Lite
Following the launch of the Apple Vision Pro, it has been speculated that Apple is developing a more affordable and compact version of the headset. Rumors indicate that this new model will be positioned as an entry-level option.
The main challenge in producing a less expensive version lies in the cost of OLED screens, which are a significant factor in the price of the original headset. Apple is reportedly exploring cost-effective solutions, including the possibility of partnering with a new supplier.
However, Apple has not yet officially confirmed this information or provided details about a potential release date.
Bigscreen Beyond
The Bigscreen Beyond VR headset is a new initiative from a company traditionally known for its virtual reality software, marking its entry into the hardware market. Unveiled earlier this year, this headset has been detailed in terms of price, design, specs, and key features, with delivery expected to start in May 2024.
Equipped with high-resolution OLED screens offering 2560 x 2560 pixels per eye and a refresh rate up to 90Hz, the headset is exceptionally light at just 127 grams and is priced at $999. As part of a unique approach to customization, the company requires a 3D face scan of the buyer at the time of pre-order to manufacture the custom face cushion for optimal comfort and fit.
The Bigscreen Beyond is designed with Pancake lenses, contributing to its slim profile and reduced weight. It offers a 90-degree field of view and is compatible with all VR games available on Steam. Additionally, users can use the Bigscreen app to watch movies, play games, and socialize in a virtual reality environment.
